More than 120 years ago, the system known as chiropractic was developed to correct alignment issues in the skeleton. Today, chiropractors also provide other services, but correcting misalignments in the spine and other areas of the musculoskeletal system remains the mainstay of chiropractic care. If you live in the areas of Englewood, Clayton, Phillipsburg, or Dayton, Dr. Albert Teague, of Teague Chiropractic, is the premier choice.
Chiropractic care begins with the concept that structure affects function. It seems self-evident that if the spine or joints are out of alignment, pain is the expected result. However, what is less obvious is that spinal alignment can also affect the function of the internal organs. For example, misalignments of the spine can increase blood pressure and heart rate, and affect digestion or breathing. In addition, chiropractic care is holistic, meaning the focus includes nutrition, stress management, exercise, and healthy sleep habits.
The spine is the bedrock of the body’s support system. Poor posture and body mechanics, injury, overuse, and tight muscles can change the alignment in the spine, causing pain and dysfunction. Spinal manipulation restores the correct alignment, allowing free movement and relieving pain. The adjustments are made by hand, gently pulling the joint past its normal range to allow it to slip back into position.
Restoring spinal or other joint alignments is only part of what a chiropractor does. Among the other therapies – called modalities – are the use of heat, cold, ultrasound, or laser to help relieve pain and swelling and/or promote healing. Massage therapy is important for tense, tight muscles. Activities such as motion or gait analysis can pinpoint ways of moving that may have caused or contributed to the problem. Targeted, individualized exercise strengthens and stretches muscles, while nutrition counseling helps optimize “fuel” for the body and can decrease inflammation.
When to See a Chiropractor
Acute or chronic pain are the leading reasons people seek the services of a chiropractor. Back pain is likely the most common reason, but neck pain, headaches, and joint pain may also warrant a chiropractic visit. Automobile accidents, especially those that cause whiplash, can result in neck pain and headaches that can be relieved by chiropractic adjustments. Poor posture can lead to muscle tension and spasm – even if this doesn’t affect alignment, it can result in pain that is relieved by chiropractic treatment.
